TEST YOUR LIMITS
If we were to restrict ourselves to simply describing the technicalities of the event, Targa NZ is a road race series in which competitors race against the clock in ‘Special Stages’ and compile points over each race leg(up to eight per day), to arrive at a series champion. These legs are held as part of an event, 2 or 3 times per year, and are typically Targa Rotorua, Targa Hawkes Bay and Targa New Zealand. Each event is within a few hours commute from Auckland, and are typically between 2 and 5 days long, requiring a reasonable time commitment by competitor and service crew of between 3 and 9 days to attend each event. The series is contested by approximately 70-100 entrants and you need to be present at all Targa events in order to win the series overall. Each event has specific results.

However, at it’s core, Targa NZ is a passport to driving your competition car (or rent one of our competition vehicles) through gorgeous, technically challenging sealed Kiwi roads, testing your driving capability and your service crews tenacity, through the most beautiful scenery of any country in the world. Targa NZ is a unique experience, with Kiwi hospitality, ingenuity and camaraderie to be found at every pit stop, service stop and overnight stay. Whether you need advice, parts or simply some words of wisdom, the crew and competitors that make up the Targa family are there for you. Rather than fanatical secret keeping, and arrogant isolation, Targa competitors and crews are often found lounging in one an others pits, laughing through the car window, or hanging out before, after and during the event.

However, if you have a classic car, European exotic or simply a car that is special to you then Targa also provides you with an opportunity to drive your vehicle at speed on those same competition stages, behind an experienced Tour Lead vehicle matched to your skill level. And, if you enjoy fine food, beautiful scenery, then the Targa Tour is an experience you should treat yourself to. You will be able to drive your car at speed in a safe closed road environment not offered anywhere else on the planet, with world class instructors and world class food! Running a few minutes ahead of the competitors, you get to experience the same course as the Targa Competitors and who knows one day in the future you want to join them in your own dedicated race car!

And no comment on Targa NZ would be complete without showing what a phenomenal cost value Targa NZ is, when compared to the rest of the world. If we look at a small event – like our two day Targa Rotorua – no other Targa event in the world has the favorable ratio of touring kilometers (the time spent driving your car between race stages) to competition stage kilometers. Targa NZ provides less touring to the same competition stages (2:1) and more competition kilometers per day, than any other event! On top of this value, because we do not allow pace notes, driver’s are typically driving their cars to 8/10th’s of their potential, so wear and tear is reduced. Targa NZ will continue to operate without pace notes – not only because it’s a truer test of driver talent, but because like the changing scenery you drive through, the road conditions and weather can change just as much as the four seasons in one day all in the time it takes for safety cars take to go through the stage.
